An unconventional parlor maid upends the lives of an aristocratic family in prewar England Cluny Brown refuses to know her place in society. Last week, she took herself to tea at the Ritz. Then she spent almost an entire day in bed eating oranges. So, to teach her discipline, her uncle, a plumber who has raised the orphaned girl since she was a baby, sends her into service as a parlor maid at one of England’s stately manor houses. At Friars Carmel in Devonshire, Cluny meets her employers: Sir Henry, the quintessential country squire, and Lady Carmel, who oversees the management of her home with unruffled calm. Their son, Andrew, newly returned from abroad with a Polish émigré writer friend, is certain the country is once again on the brink of war. Then there’s Andrew’s beautiful fiancée and the priggish town pharmacist. While everyone around her struggles to keep pace with a rapidly changing world, Cluny continues to be Cluny, transforming those around her with her infectious zest for life. “An entertaining story of England just before the war . . . Top drawer reading.” —Kirkus Reviews

Armed with speakers, turntables, light systems, and records, Filipino American mobile DJ crews, such as Ultimate Creations, Spintronix, and Images, Inc., rocked dance floors throughout the San Francisco Bay Area from the late 1970s through the mid-1990s. In Legions of Boom noted music and pop culture writer and scholar Oliver Wang chronicles this remarkable scene that eventually became the cradle for turntablism. These crews, which were instrumental in helping to create and unify the Bay Area's Filipino American community, gave young men opportunities to assert their masculinity and gain social status. While crews regularly spun records for school dances, weddings, birthdays, or garage parties, the scene's centerpieces were showcases—or multi-crew performances—which drew crowds of hundreds, or even thousands. By the mid-1990s the scene was in decline, as single DJs became popular, recruitment to crews fell off, and aspiring scratch DJs branched off into their own scene. As the training ground for a generation of DJs, including DJ Q-Bert, Shortkut, and Mix Master Mike, the mobile scene left an indelible mark on its community that eventually grew to have a global impact.

About the Author . . . Henry Vanderbilt Johnson, Jr. I grew up on the Outer Banks, North Carolina (Manteo) and Hyde County. He is the middle child with four other siblings. His father served the in the United States army for twenty-one years. While his father was away, Johnson was compelled to play the role of "great protector" of the household. He utterly hated elementary school due ongoing encounters with bullies and indifferent teachers. He described classroom settings as incarcerated learning environments. Johnson viewed teachers as security guards and principals as wardens. Johnson describes his elementary and middle school experiences as tortuous and dehumanizing. He began school at the older age of seven instead of six. He spent two years in the first grade and tolerated ridicule and bullying each day from students who didn't like him. After being retained in the first grade, Johnson experienced another setback during his sophomore year of high school when the black community of his school district elected to stage a boycott in protest of a plan to close all black schools within the county. As such, he was nearly twenty-one years old before graduating high school. Due to the fact that his father was in the military, Johnson traveled extensively. He lived in France, Germany, Fairfax, Virginia, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and a host of other small towns and cities. He describes Kronicles of a Kolored Kid as a paper trail of his experiences growing up as a poor black male in eastern North Carolina. He shares a host of stories about the internal dynamics of the black community, social class systems, rites of passage, encounters with the Ku Klux Klan, friendships, betrayals, and death. He contends that his chronicle will compel you to laugh out loud and shed tears of sorrow. Johnson received a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Virginia Tech, a (CAGS) Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies from Virginia Tech, an Education Specialist Degree from East Carolina University, a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from North Carolina A & T State University, a Master's Degree in Middle School Education and Reading from North Carolina A & T State University, and Bachelor of Science Degree in Intermediate Education from Elizabeth City State University. He is currently employed as an Associate Professor and Coordinator of Middle Grades and Secondary Education at Elizabeth City State University, Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
