In fact, girls and boys of that age are supposed to spend their time studying what other people write. It is pre-sumed that at that age they do not themselves have anything significant or interesting to say. And the education system guarantees just that. The best rewards go to those who can parrot set answers to set questions in examination halls. Those who try to use their imagination or reply differently are often punished with low grades.

Penguin Specials are designed to fill a gap. Written to be read over a long commute or a short journey, they are original and exclusively in digital form. This is Toby Young's guide to setting up a Free school. In September 2011, one of the most radical and controversial education reforms in the UK became a reality when twenty-four Free Schools - funded by the tax-payer but shaped and run by parents, teachers and charities, independently of Local Authority control - opened their gates to children across the country. They are the centrepiece of the Coalition government's argument for a 'Big Society' and have provided a key battleground between political combatants on all sides. The crusade on their behalf in the face of fierce opposition has been led by the outspoken journalist Toby Young, whose West London Free School was one of the first. In this witty, pithy essay, Young explains step-by-step how he gathered support and saw his vision through, from securing premises, teachers and students to fighting off opponents at every turn. At once an argument and a how-to guide, this timely Penguin Special is the essential manifesto for the Free Schools movement and a must-read for supporters and detractors alike.

As this book takes us on an eye-opening journey into the nation's school kitchens, the author offers an assessment of school food in the United States. She reveals the forces that determine how lunch is served, such as the financial troubles of schools, the commercialization of childhood, and the reliance on market models. The author explores the deep politics of food provision from multiple perspectives including history, policy, nutrition, environmental sustainability, taste, and more. How did our children end up eating nachos, pizza, and Tater Tots for lunch? How did we get into the absurd situation in which nutritionally regulated meals compete with fast food items and snack foods loaded with sugar, salt, and fat? What is the nutritional profile of the federal meals? How well are they reaching students who need them? Opening a window onto our culture as a whole, she concludes with a vision for change: fresh, healthy food for all children as a regular part of their school day.

Illegal drug use is a recurrent problem across the nation, but at particular risk are the nation's youth. Studies have shown that among children, drug use begins with the abuse of legal substances (ie tobacco and alcohol) before graduating to illegal drugs, with marijuana generally the first. Along with drug abuse, violence is another danger the nation's young people must face, be it drug motivated or the result of other behavioural problems. Schools are considered prime places to head off these two threats through education about abstaining from drugs and controlling violent tendencies. In 1996, the Department of Education began overseeing the Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act, which funds both state and national drug and violence prevention programs. Unfortunately, follow-up studies have revealed mixed results to the national program. The Education Department, though, is considering steps to strengthen and improve this critical program. This book examines and evaluates the Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act and its programs, placing the measure in a background context and looking at its financial and administrative structures. Given the major problems of drug abuse and violence threatening to overwhelm children, these studies make for a timely analysis of an important issue.
