Expressive nudes and self-portraits, strange movements and morbid colours Egon Schiele (1890-1918) - along with Oskar Kokoschka - is the painter who had the most long-lasting influence on the Vienna art scene after the great era of Klimt came to a close. After a short flirtation with Klimt's style, Schiele soon questioned the aesthetic orientation to the beautiful surface of the Viennese Art Nouveau with his rough and not easily accessible paintings. Many contemporaries found Schiele's expressive nudes and self-portraits, with their strange movements and morbid colours, to be ugly and even morally objectionable--criticism which culminated in criminalizing the painter as 'obscene' and resulted in 1912 in an indictment and short jail sentence. However, not even his harshest critics could dispute the artist's extraordinary drawing talent. About the Series: Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Art Series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 colour illustrations with explanatory captions

Wilson Pickett was arguably the greatest male soul screamer of the 1960s and '70s. With a career spanning half a century, he sold millions of albums and tens of millions of singles, leaving a legacy of unforgettable hits, including "In the Midnight Hour," "Land of 1000 Dances," and "MustangSally." A first ballot inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Pickett collaborated with some of the biggest names in '60s and '70s pop, rock, and soul, and his passionate stage performances frequently garnered invasions by frenzied audience members of all colors eager to bask-and dance-in hisradiant aura. A musician of rare instinct with an unmistakable intensity and charisma, the "Wicked" Pickett was for many the living embodiment of soul.In the first biography of this legendary artist, veteran music journalist Tony Fletcher goes far beyond anecdote, weaving the turns of Pickett's extraordinary career into the larger story of black American music in the late 20th Century. As Fletcher shows, from his childhood in the gospel-richcotton fields of Alabama to his early career in pre-Motown Detroit and long tenure at Atlantic Records, Wilson Pickett always positioned himself at the cutting edge of rhythm 'n' blues and soul. By the time he was thirty, Pickett had five #1 RandB hits, rubbed shoulders with the likes of JamesBrown, Otis Redding and the Who, and traveled to Ghana with Ike and Tina Turner, Santana and others to headline the first American popular music package to visit the continent. As with so many artists of his generation, the price of superstardom was a career punctuated by violence and drug abuse, with fits of erratic and wild behavior leading to a career slump and two jail terms in the late 1990s before a late career redemption. Drawn from extensive interviews with the singer's close family and friends and regular members of his studio and touring bands, In the Midnight Hour is a narrative portrait of one of the greatest voices of soul and a rare window into the social upheavals that surrounded him, the genre he helpedshape along the way, and the pitfalls of the fame that success brought him.

Bobby Womack's is the story of R&B and soul itself, a crucial link between the gospel of the 1950s and the greatest soul and rock of the 1960s and 1970s. As well as the 40 albums and 30 million records he sold in his own right, he provided key support and partied hard with the likes of the Rolling Stones and Sly Stone. In a turbulent life often as afflicted with battles with drink and drugs as it was with rich music, Womack was one of the last to see his friend Janis Joplin shortly before she died and one of the key witnesses to the mysterious shooting of Sam Cooke. He worked with Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and Rod Stewart and his own hits included 'What Is This' and 'Across 110th Street'. He turned to drink and drugs after the murder of his brother Harry and went on the rampage with the likes of Sly Stone for much of the 1970s. It was a wild time he was lucky to survive. Back from the brink, he's gone on to be a hero to millions, with modern-day musicians claiming him as a key influence.
