For two centuries, the piano music of Chopin has evoked vocal quality to listeners, and scholars have looked to vocal genres that may have influenced his oeuvre. The rich tradition of the vocal nocturne, lasting over a century, is documented in a 1993 article by the author. Cultivated by well over seventy composers, the vocal nocturne tradition marks the transition of Italian and French vocal music to the newly developing style of the piano. Scholars researching vocal genres include two recent Ph. D. dissertations (David Kasunic, Princeton, 2003, and Maria van Epenhausen Rose, NYU, 2006). An article by Parakilas ("Nuit plus belle qu'un beau jour," 2000) specifically treats the vocal nocturne and the music of Chopin, citing musical examples, as does one by Jeffrey Kahlberg. The research for this paper grows directly from the vocal nocturne tradition itself, widespread throughout Europe for the six decades before Chopin's arrival in Paris. The most significant examples of the vocal nocturne in Chopin's nocturnes are Op. 27, No. 1 (mm. 19-26 and mm. 94-98), Op. 27, No. 2 (mm. 10-17), Opus posth. 72, No. 1 (mm. 12-26), KK IVa No. 16 (mm. 21-23, mm. 25-27) and Op. 62, No. 1 (mm. 11-21). Chopin often infused his works with an evocation of two sopranos. The tradition of vocal duets was well known in Europe during the time of Chopin, for example, those of Felice Blangini who wrote over 170, and whose nocturnes "made the tour of the world ... in Paris, London, Vienna, Berlin, Naples, Milan, Munich and Saint Petersburg."Metastasian poetry from the Strofe per musica inspired the Italian vocal nocturne. The translation to French was a critical transition, not only for vocal music, but also for the piano. In Chopin's music, a relatively short passage taken from the vocal nocturne tradition infuses the work with the nostalgia of Italian song, such as represented in Donizetti's Nuits d'ete a Pausilippe. One of the best examples of Chopin's use of the vocal nocturne to create atmospheric textures is found, not in a nocturne, but in the Barcarolle, op. 60. Eighteenth century examples of vocal duets by Hasse and other composers show that the titles "nocturne" and "barcarolle" were practically interchangeable in the eighteenth century. Although hundreds of vocal nocturnes were written, in comparison there are relatively few vocal works entitled Barcarolle. However, vocal barcarolles from the time of Chopin do exist, such as those printed in Le Menestrel. Another example of the vocal nocturne/barcarolle is the sublime C sharp minor theme that comprises the middle section of the Scherzo No. 4 in E Major. Chopin's masterpiece evokes the texts and textures reminiscent of the "panorama lunare" found in many vocal duets of the period.Chopin's Prelude in F Sharp Major, Op. 28, No. 13 is an example of a multi-voice nocturne, as is the Nouvelle Etude in A Flat Major. Use of a vocal nocturne in a genre very different from the piano nocturne can be found the Tempo di Mazurka of the Polonaise, Op. 44. The nostalgic vocal quality can be traced directly to the tradition of the Duetto Notturno, or Duo Nocturne of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
