Every December, The Nutcracker comes to life in theaters all across the United States. But how did this 19th-century Russian ballet become such a big part of the holidays in 21st-century America? Meet Willam, Harold, and Lew Christensen, three small-town Utah boys who caught the ballet bug in the early 1900s. They performed on vaudeville and took part in the New York City dance scene. Russian immigrants shared the story of The Nutcracker with them, and during World War II, they staged their own Christmastime production in San Francisco. It was America's first full-length version and the beginning of a delightful holiday tradition.

The Nutcracker is the most popular ballet in the world, adopted and adapted by hundreds of communities across the United States and Canada every Christmas season. In this entertainingly informative book, Jennifer Fisher offers new insights into the Nutcracker phenomenon, examining it as a dance scholar and critic, a former participant, an observer of popular culture, and an interviewer of those who dance, present, and watch the beloved ballet. Fisher traces The Nutcracker’s history from its St. Petersburg premiere in 1892 through its emigration to North America in the mid-twentieth century to the many productions of recent years. She notes that after it was choreographed by another Russian immigrant to the New World, George Balanchine, the ballet began to thrive and variegate: Hawaiians added hula, Canadians added hockey, Mark Morris set it in the swinging sixties, and Donald Byrd placed it in Harlem. The dance world underestimates The Nutcracker at its peril, Fisher suggests, because the ballet is one of its most powerfully resonant traditions. After starting life as a Russian ballet based on a German tale about a little girl’s imagination, The Nutcracker has become a way for Americans to tell a story about their communal values and themselves.

The American Nutcracker

Release Date : 2006-08

Download The American Nutcracker written by N. O. Slak and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-08 with Humor categories.

Although the topics author N. O. Slak chooses to write about contain humor, satire, and true personal stories, The American Nutcracker is intended for those who share his opinions, yet are hesitant to convey their message for fear of being politically incorrect.Differences of opinion are encouraged in the United States and are even considered healthy by some. Slak offers his interesting viewpoint on everything from the workplace and grocery shopping to celebrities and award shows. Here are some examples: Self-proclaimed environmentalists tend to do a lot of whining, but there's not much going on as far as action. Actors, like studio executives, come and go. But why do they continue to soak up-and even beg for-those gratuitous fifteen minutes of fame? You think the State of the Union Address is long and boring? Think again. Only at award shows can you hear the most long-winded, revolting, and obnoxious speeches. Slak is in no way bashful in his self-elected job of speaking for the silent majority. If you can't handle the truth, coupled with a little sarcasm and satire, then go ahead and put The American Nutcracker down and slowly back away.

This anthology of poetry collects 21st century American works by both established and emerging poets that deal with the public events, government policies, ecological and political threats, economic uncertainties, and large-scale violence that have largely defined the century to date. But these 138 poems by 50 poets do not simply describe, lament, or bear witness to contemporary events; they also explore the linguistic, temporal, and imaginative problems involved in doing so. In this way, the anthology offers a comprehensive look at contemporary American poetry, demonstrating that poets are moving at once toward a new engagement with public concerns and toward a focus on the problems of representation. A detailed introduction by the editors along with poetics statements by many of the poets add depth and context to a book that will appeal to anyone interested in the state and evolution of contemporary American poetry.
