During more than thirty years of reading reminiscences, diaries, and letters of forgotten North American pioneer women, poet Jana Harris noticed one narrative recurring time and again: the most powerful memory these women had was often either their courtship and wedding, or the courtship and wedding of a family member. While these young women, who most likely hauled water in a wooden bucket from creek to house and then wore her knees raw scrubbing splintery floors (if she was lucky enough to live in a home that had a floor), dreamed of a fine wedding, it was sometimes with a man they hardly knew. Harris captures the hope, anxiety, anger, and despair of these women through a variety of voices and poetic strategies. Based on interviews of 19th century frontier women conducted during the 1920 s and 30 s, the voices and images of these powerful women speak: Nowhere / on these parchment leaves do I find / myself, my likeness, my name, / not a whisper "Cynthia" not one / breath of me. Sculpted out of years of research and accompanied by archival photographs, these poems imagine the memoirs of forgotten frontier women and children. "

Wall Street Journal, "Favorite Books of the Year 2013" Cosmopolitan, "Best Books of the Year for Women" Library Journal, "Best Books of 2013" Salon, "Best Books of 2013" "Haunting... more than a beautifully written memoir. [A] powerful and raw love letter."—The Washington Post A blazingly passionate memoir of identity and love: when a charismatic and troubled young woman dies tragically, her identical twin must struggle to survive Christa Parravani and her identical twin, Cara, were linked by a bond that went beyond siblinghood, beyond sisterhood, beyond friendship. Raised up from poverty by a determined single mother, the gifted and beautiful twins were able to create a private haven of splendor and merriment between themselves and then earn their way to a prestigious college and to careers as artists (a photographer and a writer, respectively) and to young marriages. But, haunted by childhood experiences with father figures and further damaged by being raped as a young adult, Cara veered off the path to robust work and life and in to depression, drugs and a shocking early death. A few years after Cara was gone, Christa read that when an identical twin dies, regardless of the cause, 50 percent of the time the surviving twin dies within two years; and this shocking statistic rang true to her. "Flip a coin," she thought," those were my chances of survival." First, Christa fought to stop her sister's downward spiral; suddenly, she was struggling to keep herself alive. Beautifully written, mesmerizingly rich and true, Christa Parravani's account of being left, one half of a whole, and of her desperate, ultimately triumphant struggle for survival is informative, heart-wrenching and unforgettably beautiful.

Gordon Burridge left Scotland in July 1957 to take up a position as Agricultural Supervisor in the small African country of Nyasaland. He was followed eight months later by his young fiancée, Marian, who left behind a Scottish winter for an unusual wedding and safari honeymoon, camping in the African bush. They started married life in a remote but beautiful place, in the very north of the country. This is the story of their dramatic and sometimes dangerous years, adapting to life in Africa, getting to know the Africans, enduring basic living conditions and later political unrest among the local African population. They overcame the isolation, travelling to find friends in their bumpy, overworked Land Rover. The adventures of Marian and Gordon in Africa, happy and otherwise, were well documented in regular letters to family in Scotland. These were kept by Gordon's mother and reading them fifty years later, they realised they had a wonderful story to tell. They now look forward to a second book, about adjusting to Canadian winters after leaving the heat of Africa. Tentatively titled “Out of the Frying Pan into the Freezer” it is due to be published late 2012.
